Demeo: PC Edition Review: Still Amazing
My Top-10 Games of the Year list for 2021 featured a game that, quite simply put, is social VR at its best. Now available to play on PC for non-VR users, Demeo: PC Edition – from Resolution Games – gives you that same authentic experience in playing with friends and strangers alike through their shared tabletop setting without the need for a headset. The included expansion packs of "Realm of the Rat King" and "Roots of Evil” add even more content, making Demeo: PC Edition a must-play title for fans of dungeon crawling, RPGs, and tabletop games.
Resolution Games’ newest release comes with all of the features from the VR version, making gameplay seamlessly comfortable and easy while exploring this world via mouse and keyboard. The studio also continues its tradition of developing games that can be played across platforms with VR and traditional PC players. Last year, Resolution published Carly & The Reaperman on Oculus where crossplay compatibility was made possible through the Steam platform – giving VR and non-VR players an opportunity to play together. Demeo: PC Edition features that same crossplay compatibility, which is great considering I’m one of the only people in my friend’s group with a VR headset. Now, I can dungeon crawl with my D&D group virtually, and it’s just like a night of being crowded around the table in-person, running through dungeons and collecting loot.
Gameplay in Demeo: PC Edition is much like a typical board game. Each player takes turns moving throughout the dungeons and collecting treasure, power-ups, and battling mobs of baddies and bosses. Controls are intuitive, which makes it easy to pick up even if you’re new to this type of game. Demeo: PC Edition feels like a natural PC evolution of the VR version – from picking up and moving your character to using ability cards, everything is just as user-friendly in this new setting with zero issues cropping up so far while switching between Oculus and PC.
I find myself drawn into the virtual dungeons on PC just as much as in the VR version of Demeo, which is no small feat. The team at Resolution Games has created something incredible in that regard, creating an immersive experience whether you’re playing in virtual reality or not.
What’s left to say about Resolution Games’ Demeo? I’m on record at multiple outlets saying just how wonderful the dungeon-crawling RPG is, and it’s obvious that Resolution Games is a clear-cut leader within the realm of VR. If you have a VR headset, but have continued to ignore my advice and haven’t checked out any of its games yet, you are doing yourself and the VR industry a disservice. I can’t wait to get my hands on the studio’s next game, Ultimechs, which is slated to be playable sometime this year.
As far as Demeo goes, the sky continues to be the limit for the massively impressive VR title. Someday, I’ll be able to get my hands on the special physical tabletop game. Until then, you can find me in the catacombs.
A PC code was provided to GamingPizza for this review. Demeo: PC Edition is available on Steam today, and includes all previously released content, including “The Black Sarcophagus,” "Realm of the Rat King," and "Roots of Evil."
