The Nintendo Switch’s 6.2-inch LCD panel is more than serviceable for a portable, handheld console. The 7-inch OLED panel on the Nintendo Switch OLED is even better. Of course, TV and PC monitor viewing is an easily accessible option for a docked Switch, too… but what if you’re looking for a happy compromise while on the go? The Up-Switch ORION offers a unique solution that might be perfect for you.

The Up-Switch ORION is a handheld gaming device that promises to revolutionize the portable gaming experience. With its 11.6″ display, built-in dual stereo speakers, and the option to play via handheld or tabletop, the ORION looks to be a must-have for any gamer on the go. But does it live up to the hype? We put the Up-Switch ORION through its paces to find out.

Design & Hardware

From a design standpoint, the Up-Switch ORION looks and feels premium. The heavy-duty chassis gives it a solid heft without being too heavy, and the detachable Joy-Con handles provide both grip and style. The HD IPS 11.6″ monitor — which is 188% larger than the Nintendo Switch — is bright and crisp, with excellent color reproduction and viewing angles. And the built-in speakers are exceptionally loud and clear.

But how does it actually work? Easy: just pop your Switch into the ORION’s dock, close the hatch door, and you’re good to go. It’s really about as plug-and-play as you can get.

That said, it did take me a few minutes to realize that the ORION’s power is driven by a power adapter (could I have read the instructions better?… perhaps...). Plugging my Switch’s Type C cord directly into the ORION was a pretty effortless solution. If you’re wanting to use the device when away from an outlet, the ORION is battery-powered when on-the-go, which is held easily in place with the straps on the back of the device.

It should also be mentioned that the ORION isn’t just compatible with the Switch. It also works with any HDMI-enabled console, including Xbox Series X, PS5, and PCs/laptops. There is an HDMI input that allows you to connect any gaming device and play on the ORION’s large, mobile screen. Stuck at the airport for a few extra hours? You’ll be able to stay plenty busy by posting up next to a couple of power outlets, setting up your console, and playing on the ORION. You can even connect your smartphone to the ORION for playing mobile games.

User Experience

I was admittedly surprised by how great the ORION worked. I was expecting some latency or input lag, but there was none to be found — games played just as smoothly on the ORION as they do on my docked Switch. And the added screen real estate is definitely appreciated when playing in handheld mode — it’s like having a portable TV.

The Switch will charge while docked, and you can play games either in handheld mode or tabletop mode. In handheld mode, the Switch functions just like it would normally — with the added bonus of a larger screen. In tabletop mode, you can prop up the ORION on its built-in stand and play multiplayer games with friends. The ORION also includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, in case you want to keep the noise level down.

It definitely feels like the ORION is geared toward a couple of specific types of gamers — one that is constantly on the go and doesn’t want to haul around their dock, and families with younger kids that want to be able to play together without being tethered to a TV. For the latter, the ORION is almost like a tablet that allows multiple people to play together.

Up-Switch ORION Makes Gaming on the Go Easy

The Up-Switch ORION is a great handheld gaming device for gamers who are always on the go. It’s easy to set up and use, and it provides a great way to play your favorite games without hauling around a bulky dock or monitor. The ORION is also perfect for families with younger kids, freeing up the TV for other uses. With its large screen, great speakers, and easy portability, the ORION is a solid accessory for any gamer.
